Bonus Scene: The Wrong Bride for the Mountain Man

Brock
Years Later

The house is quiet, which I don’t like. It reminds me too much of what life was like before her

I look over and see Lily still asleep in the bed with Jaxon cradled next to her, and Tatiana’s pudgy arm flung over her chest. I can’t wake them. Not with how little sleep Lily’s been getting.

I’ve offered to get her help around the house or hire a nanny, but she refuses, insisting that she’s the woman of the house and no one else is going to parent our children.

Her dedication to her family only makes me love her more.

I decide the sizzle of bacon will snap me out of my funk and head to the kitchen.

Halfway through breakfast, I hear a high-pitched squeal.

“Daddy! Daddy!” Tatiana enthuses as she rushes to the breakfast table. A minute later, Lily steps out of the bedroom, rocking Jaxon in her arms.

“Morning, beautiful,” I call.

“I told you it’s my job to make breakfast,” she says sleepily.

“Daddy makes better bacon!” Tatiana says.

Lily rolls her eyes and starts a pot of coffee.

“Did we get the wood in from the shipwreck?” she asks.

Tatiana is going through a pirate phase, so I bought up as much wood from shipwrecked pirate ships as I could and I aim to make her and Jaxon a treehouse from it.

“It’s coming midday,” I reply.

“I still can’t believe how much you paid for it.”

“Nothing is too good for my family,” I tell her, planting a kiss on her forehead.

And it’s the truth. With how successful we’ve been with growing our furniture empire, we can afford the very best.

A sharp knock sounds at the front door. I’m not expecting company, so my mood immediately sours, but Lily doesn’t seem bothered at all by the interruption.

She opens the door, and I hear her say, “Granddad Davenport, what are you doing here?”

He reaches for Jaxon, and Lily hands our youngest over to him.

“Grandpa! Grandpa!” Tatiana screeches when she hears him.

He bends and takes her into his arms too, cradling both his great-grand babies.

“I wasn’t expecting to see you today,” I tell him. “Let me put on a few more slices of bacon.”

“Please do.”

Grandpa eats with both his great-grandkids on his lap, completely unbothered by Tatiana’s constant stream of babble.

When we’re done, we go out to the fenced-in play area outside so the kids can have fun while the adults talk.

“I have to hand it to you, Lily,” Granddad says. “You sure gave me some beautiful great-grand babies.”

“Thanks, but I can’t take all the credit.” She looks at me. “I had a little help.”

Granddad chuckles. “That you did. But that’s not all I have to thank you for. Before you came along, it’d been a hot minute since I’d spoken with my grandson, and now, we have weekly meetings about our booming furniture enterprise.” He opens a briefcase he’d brought with him, takes out a stack of papers, and hands them to me. “And that’s why I have no qualms with restoring your inheritance.”

Lily’s jaw drops, and I find myself at a loss for words.

Granddad gets up, calls to the grandkids, and plays with them for a few minutes before returning.

“Well, it’s been a pleasure, but I’m afraid I have to get back to the tower.”

I hold out my hand for him to shake, and when he takes it, I pull him into a hug.

“Thanks, pops,” I tell him. “I don’t need the money, but it feels good knowing that you believe in my family.”

“Son, I knew you were the right choice for Lily,” Granddad says. “I’m just glad you realized it, too.”

Lily comes up and kisses him on the cheek. “You’re welcome back anytime, Granddad.”

“Oh, don’t tempt me. The city has been getting a little rough for me over the last few years, and I could see myself lying in one of those hammocks you have up in the trees.”

“We’ll leave one open for you,” Lily says as we walk him to the door.

Once we’re alone, I pin Lily to the wall, covering her mouth with mine. She moans against my mouth but quickly jerks away when she remembers the kids.

“Woman, you better get them down for a nap right the hell now,” I scold, slapping her ass as she hustles to corral them to their beds.

Thankfully, they’ve always been good nappers, and not ten minutes go by before she’s in my arms again.

“God, what have I done to get me such a perfect wife?” I growl into her ear as I undo the ties of her dress.

“You’re not the only one who has something to be thankful for.”

I spend the next hour kissing, licking, sucking, and making love to my wife the way I do most every afternoon. She gives as good as she gets, her eyes lighting with glee at my every groan.

And when we’re both spent, lying in each other arms, without a care in the world, I know this is how it was always meant to be. Lily saved me from a life of loneliness, and I would give every dollar I own up if it was the only way I could keep her.

This is my girl. My woman. My wife.

And I’m going to spend the rest of my life making sure her smile never leaves her face.
